President Trump ran on a campaign that touted his ability to make America great again. The problem that I have, is that Mr. Trump thinks that America was at some point, not great. As a patriot, I love this country. I believe we have always been a great country with the hardest working citizens in the world. It is our government that is mediocre.

Have you ever thought about running for political office? Now is the time to think about running in local elections. Have you ever said, “I could do a better job,” if so, you probably can. We need you. Do not wait until you see signs popping up in your neighborhood this September. It will be too late.

If you want to get into politics because your ego wants to see your name in the paper, forget it. We don’t want you running for office. It is supposed to be a servants job. However, if you are willing to sacrifice your time for the good of your community, please do. We need you.

Stamford, Connecticut is a city with over 126,000 people and is only 35 miles from New York City, but most people have never heard of it. Stamford has the potential to be a city of excellence, but its leadership is mediocre. If I would give the city a present it would be this:

I am a business owner in Stamford and very busy, but I cannot sit by and watch this city get worse. The fiscal policies don’t make sense to me. I have met or spoken with many of the leaders. Yesterday, I met with the Director of Economic Development, Thomas Madden. When I asked what are the priorities for the city, he started by talking about, a bike share plan. I said, “like Citi Bike?” He said, “yes.”

After doing some research, I found that the bike share program will cost $1,200-$1,600 per bike, per year!  He is also exploring autonomous vehicle district. Do you think this is a good idea? Maybe in the future, but right now, we are in a crisis. We are facing huge budget cuts from Hartford. Mayor Martin issued a press release in December that said,” I am confident that with a bit of belt tightening, the city can absorb half of the cut to educational funding so that the burden is not entirely felt by our children.”

Wow! Sorry kids, we may have to fire a cafeteria worker, janitor, or teacher’s aide, but you are going to be able to rent a bike downtown and ride in driverless bus in the South End. Isn’t that every child’s dream?

The most valuable gift you can give is your time. We never know how many days we have left on this earth, but we have today. So, I urge you to read the planning documents for your city. Read the press releases that are coming out of the government office. Are those messages to your benefit? Talk to your local representatives. Do they represent your ideals and values? If not, think about running against them.
